Every tool the server exposes

Use for retrieving actual census data (counts or rates) for one or more geographies (by DGUID, from statcan_census_profile_search_geography) crossed with one or more characteristics (by code, from statcan_census_profile_search_characteristic), for a given gender breakdown. Multiple geography_codes or characteristic_codes are combined (every geography x every characteristic). Returns each value alongside its data-quality flag and confidence interval when the upstream API supplies one -- do not drop a flagged or interval-bounded value silently.

Use for discovering what level keys (needed by statcan_census_profile_archive_get_download_link) and file formats exist for one archived census (2001, 2006, 2011, or 2016) before the 2021 Census Profile (covered by statcan_census_profile_* instead). Coverage genuinely narrows going back in time: 2016 has 34 geography groupings, 2011 has 14, 2006 and 2001 each have 5. Use for "when is the next release of X" -- the planned date of upcoming Daily releases of key indicators (Labour Force Survey, international merchandise trade, building permits, CPI and so on, with their reference period), checked live to reach about six months ahead. query needs every word to appear in the title, reference period or catalogue number (accents ignored); start_date and end_date are "YYYY-MM-DD". With upcoming_only=True (default) results run soonest first from today (Toronto); with False they are the history, newest first. kind "products" is the catalogue-number release history since 2012 only: that file has no future dates (use it for "when was catalogue 62-013-X published"); "all" merges both. Scheduled rows have no URL until the release is out. Dates are plans and can move. For releases already out use statcan_daily_search_archive.

Each entry has scheduled (true when the release date is today or later, Toronto time); an upcoming one has url null because its article does not exist yet.

A Delta File only exists for business days that had a release (weekends and holidays will report exists=False); check exists before treating the url as downloadable. Use for "what was published on this date", checking whether a cube changed that day before fetching it, release-day monitoring. Each entry: productId, CANSIM number, English and French titles, frequency, release time, series count, archive status, corrections and dimensions (with members and correction notes when detail is True and product_id is given). Cheap even for the 3.9 GB day: about 1 MB is fetched. date is "YYYY-MM-DD", a business day among the roughly 47 kept (statcan_delta_list_files shows which). query filters by a word in either title. Rows are read with statcan_delta_read_table. The list is not WDS getChangedCubeList for the same date: WDS lists the cubes whose releaseTime falls on that date, while a day's file holds every cube processed since the previous file (built before 8:30 ET), with its own releaseTime. So a release after 8:30 lands in the next business day's file (42100107, released 2026-09-29 at 14:20, is in the 20261001 file with that releaseTime: 51 tables against WDS's 50; it was also in the 20260929 file marked 08:30), and metadata-only changes to old cubes keep their old releaseTime (four 2024-10-03 cubes in 20260925: 23 against 19). Compare release_time with the date to tell them apart.

Use for the exact values released or revised for one productId on one date, checking a release-day revision, pulling a handful of vectors from a large update. Rows carry vectorId, coordinate, reference period, value, symbol/status/security/scalar-factor/frequency codes (decoded in legend from the file's codeSet.xml) and release time. Values are raw: the scalar factor is not applied. Rows are never deleted; a correction arrives in the next day's file. The CSV is sorted by productId and must be inflated from its start, so a cube early in a big file is quick, and one deep in a multi-gigabyte file (20261001: 3.9 GB) takes several calls: each call reads up to 400 MB or 75 s (about 5 MB/s), then errors with how far it got and saves resume points, so calling again with the same arguments continues from there. Once a day's file has been scanned past a table, later reads of it on this server start next to it (scan_started_at_byte). For a single deep table, wds_get_changed_series_data or wds_get_full_table_download is faster. block_complete is False when the ceiling stopped inside the table's own rows. vector_ids keeps only those series; max_rows (1 to 10,000) caps the answer. date is "YYYY-MM-DD"; the productId must be in statcan_delta_list_tables for that date.

Use for discovering what geography boundary products exist for a given year before drilling into a service's layers. A census year (e.g. "2021") publishes a full suite (Cartographic/Digital boundary files, Agricultural/Population ecumene boundary files, Road Network File, each in English and French) with every geography level; an intercensal year publishes only a smaller CSD-level update and the Road Network File -- this genuinely varies year to year and is discovered live, not hardcoded. Years 2019-2025 confirmed live; nothing older is served here (use statcan_census_profile_archive_* for older bulk boundary/data downloads instead). Only the lang edition of each product is listed: French services (e.g. "Fichiers_des_limites_cartographiques") carry French layer names and field aliases.

For "nrn", province ("ON") and road_class ("Local roads") narrow the list. Group layers are listed (is_group=true) but hold no rows. The infc/hna/qol service addresses are undocumented and read from StatCan's map-app config file at runtime; a clear error says so if StatCan changes it. Free under the Statistics Canada Open Licence. Use for finding a geography's DGUID/UID by name (e.g. where="CSDNAME='Toronto'"), finding which area contains a point ("which census tract / dissemination area / CSD is at this lat/lon": pass lat and lon, WGS84 degrees, and pick the layer for the level wanted), listing the areas touching a rectangle (bbox = "min_lon,min_lat,max_lon,max_lat"), or retrieving boundary polygons for mapping. distance_m widens a point to a radius in metres. A spatial filter combines with where and out_fields (e.g. out_fields="CTUID,DGUID" keeps the answer small) and is echoed back in spatial_filter. where is a standard SQL-style predicate against the layer's own field names from statcan_geo_get_layer_detail (e.g. "PRUID='35' AND CSDNAME LIKE '%Toronto%'"); leave the default "1=1" to match every feature in the layer. Leave return_geometry false (the default) for a lightweight attribute-only query -- polygon boundaries can be large, and most lookups only need the UID/DGUID/name columns. When return_geometry is true, geometry is reprojected to out_sr (WGS84 lat/lon, EPSG:4326, by default -- the service's native spatial reference is EPSG:3347, Statistics Canada Lambert). Each layer enforces its own maxRecordCount as a hard per-request cap regardless of result_record_count (6000 confirmed for 2021's Cartographic boundary layers); check exceeded_transfer_limit on the result and page further with result_offset if more features remain. Confirmed live: this host intermittently returns HTTP 500 on an otherwise-valid request (roughly one in three to five calls, a load-balanced backend with some unhealthy nodes) -- already mitigated by this client's normal retry behavior, so a rare persisting failure is a genuine outage, not a malformed request. The language comes from service, so lang has no effect here.
